AUBURN, Ala.—The Alabama Cooperative Extension System and the Alabama Green Industry Training Center will host the Pesticide Applicator University, a comprehensive continuing education program for people who have commercial applicator permits, Oct. 26 and 27 at the Opelika Grand National Hotel and Conference Center in Opelika.
Dr. Sonja Thomas, coordinator of Alabama Extension’s Pesticide Safety Education Program, said this conference is a new twist on training.
“This is the second year Alabama Extension is offering training in this type of format,” Thomas said. “It will be very much hands-on. Instructors will be primarily Auburn University faculty and Alabama Extension specialists, but there will be some industry professionals teaching as well.”
The Pesticide Applicators University will target a number of applicator categories including aquatic, household pest control, ornamental and turf pest control. Continuing education points have been approved for participants from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee. Points for attendees from Florida, Kentucky and Louisiana are pending.
“The conference will be very beneficial to individuals new to the pest control field and will also be a great refresher course for veteran applicators,” Thomas said. “Participants can learn about insect identification, product selection and management, Integrated Pest Management and calibration.”
Registration is available online. Early, full conference registration is $125 through Sept. 30. Individual daily registration pricing and group pricing are also available on the website. Registration will still be accepted after Sept. 30 for $149. The fee covers educational materials and meals. For more information, visit the Pesticide University website on www.aces.edu.
