AUBURN, Alabama-Two Alabama 4-H members took part in a Buckmasters Inc. sponsored deer hunt Friday, Jan. 19, in Minter, Alabama. The hunt was videoed for The Jackie Bushman Show, and will air next fall on The Outdoor Channel.
Tamara Phillips is a homeschooled sophomore. Drew Dunn, is a junior at Elmore County High School. Both are members of the River Region Rifles 4-H Shooting Sports Club of Montgomery.
The 4-H’ers actually got to hunt with Bushman. Tamara harvested her first deer, a six-point buck and Drew harvested his first buck, an eight-point.
“Tamara and Drew were selected based upon their 4-H Rifle Club achievements and marksmanship skills, and because of their excellent leadership and speaking abilities,” said Shannon Andress, a 4-H Foundation regional agent.
“4-H programs help children develop so much more than the obvious project-specific skills. 4-H youth come away from their club experiences better prepared for life. Members also explore college and career readiness, leadership and service in a safe educational setting with caring adults. The result are children such as Tamara and Drew, who make a positive difference in the world they live in now and as adults,” Andress said.
4-H Shooting Sports
“The Alabama 4-H Shooting Sports Program teaches safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment including sound decision making, self-discipline and concentration. The program promotes the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship and ethical behavior. 4-H shooting sports encourages the development of youth that value the natural world so that they become citizen activists that work to resolve the challenges and opportunities of the state’s natural resources.” added Molly Gregg, assistant director, Alabama 4-H program.
“Hunting wild game is a healthy, nutritious way to help feed a family. It also helps youth learn conservation principles,” said 4-H Shooting Sports coach Ed Boyett.
Special thanks go to Jackie Bushman, CEO of Buckmasters Inc; guides and cameramen Chris Chastain and Elliott Allen; Dennis Adams, owner of The Briar Patch Hunting Lodge; 4-H Shooting Sports Coach Ed Boyett and 4-H Foundation Regional Agent Shannon Andress.
