NORMAL, Alabama—The Alabama Cooperative Extension System’s Urban Affairs and New Nontraditional Programs team will offer a series of sheep and goat health management workshops throughout the state from March to May.
The workshop is designed to expand consumer and producer knowledge about raising healthy sheep and goats. Topics will include tagging animals, identifying injection sites, hoof health management, the FAMACHA system, using the California Mastitis Test to detect mastitis in does and ewes, caring for newborn animals, body condition scoring, nutritional and forage management, biosecurity measures, and the proper disposal of medication and other substances. Participants will also travel to a local farm for hands-on demonstrations.
“Programs like these are held annually in Alabama to assist prospective, new and experienced producers alike,” Dr. Maria Browning, an Alabama Extension animal science and forage specialist, said. “Various topics concerning nutrition, health, biosecurity and other aspects of small ruminant management are covered during these workshops.”
Interested parties may also find a complete agenda and brochure here.
Each workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., while on-farm demonstrations will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants may pre-register online. Click here to register.
