AUBURN, Ala. – Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. There are many ways that people can be active and get the exercise their body needs.
Helen Jones, an Alabama Extension regional agent of Human Nutrition, Diet and Health, said that while they can help, gym memberships are not a requirement to be healthy.
“Being physically active is important and it doesn’t have to be in a health club using exercise equipment,” Jones said. “Any type of activity that gets you moving is beneficial and more importantly when it’s an activity you enjoy, you’re more likely to continue doing it.”
Ways to Stay Active
There are many way that people can stay active. Taking a brisk walk in the morning can be a nice, refreshing way to start your day. In the evening, jogging can be a great way to unwind and relieve a long day of stress.
Participating in an exercise program is another great way to get active and stay in shape. Always make sure to check with your doctor before beginning a new fitness regime. Exercise is important, but it is equally important that you are in good health.
Benefits of Exercise
Exercise is not only good for your body. It benefits your mind, as well as your physical and mental health. Jones said that physical activity can sharpen your memory and thinking.
“Physical activity can lower your blood glucose in diabetic patients,” Jones said. “It can help you lose weight and prevent other chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, strokes, heart disease and some cancers.”
Pairing Balanced Meals with Exercise
Eating balanced meals goes hand-in-hand with exercise and other physical activities. Depending on what you hope to accomplish by exercising, eating nutritious meals is an important part of any routine.
“We need to remember that how, when, why and where we eat are just as important as what we eat,” said Jones. “We need to develop a mindful eating pattern that includes nutritious and flavorful foods – that’s the best way to savor the flavor of eating right.”
A great tip to try is preparing your meals ahead of time if you have a busy morning schedule. Grabbing food on the go from fast-food restaurants may be quick, but it will not benefit your body in the long run. It is better to be mindful of what you are putting in your body.
Exercise may take an extra 30 minutes out of your day, but it will be worth it in the end. You can take on anything that may come your way with an energized, healthy mind and body.
