AUBURN, Ala. – Calling all Alabama 4-H members! Registration for the 2018 Alabama 4-H State Horse Show is now open. The show is set for July 24-28 at the Northeast Alabama Agri-Business Center in Rainsville, Alabama.
The state horse show offers a variety of events for 4-H members to participate in. There are numerous riding classes including hunt seat, western and ranch events as well as roping, speed and drill team competitions. There are also non riding events for members to compete in.
Everyone Can Compete
Dr. Courteney Holland, an Alabama Extension animal science specialist, said that all 4-H members are welcome to attend and compete in the events.
“Members do not have to own a horse to compete in the educational events,” said Holland. “There are contests like public speaking, photography creative writing and many more where all members can compete.”
Member also do not have to own a horse to compete in the riding events. Holland said that members can lease or borrow a horse for those events.
“4-H members can compete in the riding events with a horse they have leased,” said Holland. “This can be a lease where the member actually paid to use the horse, or it can be a free lease.”
Holland said the state horse show allows member to build up experience and confidence before competing in association shows.
“This show provides a less intimidating environment for youth who want to start showing horses or who want practice before entering shows with associations,” said Holland. “The hope is the show serves as an educational tool for members all while having fun.”
New to the Show
In this year’s show, participates will be able to compete in Walk-Trot classes. Holland said that these new classes will allow more members to compete.
“The new Walk-Trot classes were created to provide an entry level class for every division and almost every patterned class,” said Holland. “No matter what age, we want members to be able to compete with all different levels of experience.”
